Sometimes it feels good to be surprised by a film that, at the outset, little or nothing is expected of them. I speak of "White Lightnin '(2009), debutant director Dominic Murphy. I know, this film never released in Portugal in the room, nor should find yourself on DVD. But made his career in various international film festivals with good critical receptivity (as happened at Sundance).
"White jerky slicer Lightnin 'is in fact a brilliant directorial debut of Dominic Murphy and features a stunning interpretation of an actor whose career I will, from now on, following carefully: Edward Hogg (the images).
The film depicts, in constant use of flashbacks and voice-over narration, the life of violence and degradation of young Jesco White who, out of reformatories and asylums, trying to make a career in rural America (50) as a dancer in bars (tap the sound of traditional banjo). The middle, find a love that will devastate, decadent bars, the tremendous rise and fall into the abyss of alcohol, jerky slicer drugs, violence and religious fanaticism. Put that way, it seems as if the film does not bring anything new. Nothing more wrong. A stunning interpretation of Edward Hogg seems out of hell (madness and death), realization, installation and photography are absolutely frantic, getting the film proves to be a big surprise at the mediocrity and predictability of the films of the genre.
The music used is the "crazy" Hasil Adkins bluesman (influenced The Cramps!) And the end of the film is a true spiral of madness, revenge and atonement as not seen, you know, since the end of "Cape Fear" Martin Scorsese (hereinafter, with all the attention, the career of director Dominic Murphy).
